University staff 'victory'

UNIVERSITY staff last night put plans for industrial action on hold after their employer said compulsory redundancies were no longer needed.

Around 80 Glasgow University posts are under threat, according to the University and College Union (UCU). But a meeting of the university court yesterday agreed that savings had been made by 28 voluntary redundancies agreed with teaching, research and support staff.

UCU Scottish official Mary Senior said the university court's decision to rule out compulsory redundancies was a "clear victory" for the union.
