Reformed Gretna claim first trophy

GRETNA 2008, the side established last year in the wake of Gretna's sad demise from Scottish football last year, have won their first trophy.

The recently formed team beat Edinburgh side Tynecastle 4-2 in a thrilling final of the Alex Jack Cup played at Netherdale, Galashiels yesterday afternoon.

Gretna 2008 manager Stuart Rome praised the young side he has led to success since Gretna went bust last season after finishing bottom of the Premier League.

He said: "This is phenomenal, there are no other words for it. Who would have thought we would have been at this stage after only four months? It's absolutely wonderful for the club, the players and the fans, we had around 300 here today.

"The conditions were terrible but our lads stuck to it and deserve everything they got."

Dan Carmichael put Gretna ahead after 27 minutes but within three minutes Ross Allum levelled when he took advantage of a defensive slip. Tony Nicholson fired home a second after 36 minutes to put the Borders side ahead again and David Reynard added a third in 65 minutes.

Tony Aird pulled one back for Tynecastle but David Seggie made sure of the cup going back to Gretna with a 78th-minute strike.
