Rallying: Early drama in Jim Clark Rally
THE 39th running of the all-tarmac Jim Clark International Rally opened as the leading competitors in the 298-strong field sped through the Berwickshire country lanes.
As the crews headed to Duns for the spectacular spectator special stage, Irishman Eugene Donnelly had opened a nine-second lead in his Skoda Fabia World Rally Car. But the man from Maghera was being chased down by the Subaru Impreza WRC of fellow countryman Eamonn Boland.
Mark Higgins was a comfortable third in his GpN Impreza, 19.1s behind Donnelly but 13secs ahead of the Ford Focus WRC of fourth-placed Gareth MacHale from Dublin.
The leading Scot was Euan Thorburn. The Duns-based driver was 62.6s off the lead in sixth in his GpN Subaru.
Scottish young gun David Bogie crashed out midway through Abbey St Bathans.
