Queen of the South 4 Airdrie United 0: Queens come up trumps in basement battle

THE Doonhamers support felt the love on Valentine's Day in Dumfries as they gave themselves some daylight from their victims as well as seeing their team jump up two places with other sides out of action.

This great win saw them go seven points ahead of Airdrie and continues a return to form after a lean spell.

Queens upped the tempo around 20 minutes and were unfortunate not be ahead with Stephen Dobbie and Sean O'Connor having chances before Martyn Lancaster headed inches past from a wicked Bob Harris free kick.

Then came the best chance so far for the Diamonds with a brave header off the line by Lancaster from Paul Di Giacomo who really should have scored after being released by Cardle at the end of a mazy dribble.

Airdrie then pushed the self-destruct button twice in a few minutes to give themselves a mountain to climb.

Firstly, on 35 minutes poor communication between defender Marc Smyth and keeper Robertson saw Smyth's back header go through Robertson's legs and the goalkeeper's momentum saw him bundle over Queens' Paul Burns for a penalty. Stephen Dobbie, back to his confident self in front of goal, converted from the spot.

Then Kevin Macdonald saw straight red for a rash challenge on Neil Scally four minutes before the break.

Queens were ruthless from here on in with a great move on 52 minutes culminating in the impressive Bob Harris placing a downward header beyond Robertson from a sublime Kevin McQuilken cross.

Then Dobbie enhanced his personal scoring tally for the season to 12 after a cheeky nutmeg through victim Robertson's legs from a Lancaster through ball on 68 minutes before sub David Weatherston added a late fourth.
