PSV may move for Vennegoor of Hesselink

PSV Eindhoven are set to discuss the possibility of re-signing Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink after the former Netherlands striker was released by Celtic this week.

PSV have previously denied any interest in the 30-year-old, who they sold to Celtic for 3.4 million in 2006, with technical director Adrie van Kraaij describing such speculation as "nonsense".

However, after being informed of Celtic's decision to let the player go, Van Kraaij admitted the prospect of a free transfer could yet entice the club to make a move.

"Is he really allowed to leave Celtic as a free agent? That's news to me," Van Kraaij told Dutch newspaper Spits.

"Those stories that we were interested earlier on were nonsense. But now I will start talks internally, like we always do. Apart from that I won't give any comments."

Vennegoor of Hesselink's Celtic contract expired earlier this week and new manager Tony Mowbray indicated on Thursday that he was happy to let the frontman leave the club.

Mowbray said: "I have had no contact with Jan. Jan is out of contract – he is free to seek other employment and I'm pretty sure that's what he will be doing at the moment."

The Dutchman previously spent five years with PSV before he was signed by Gordon Strachan in August 2006.
