Perpignan in Barca switch
Perpignan have decided to play next month's Heineken Cup quarter-final with fellow French side Toulon over the Spanish border in Barcelona.
The club, based in the minority Catalan-speaking area of south western France, will use the Olympic Stadium in Catalan capital Barcelona for the 9 April clash and 50,000 fans are expected. "It's been 15 years that we've heard talk around the club about wanting to play a match in Barcelona," Perpignan president Paul Goze told a news conference held at Barcelona's Nou Camp. "Now it's happening." Barcelona football team president Sandro Rosell, whose club are helping with the marketing of the game, added: "We want to transform the event into a great party of rugby."
Rugby union is not well known in Spain but the national side did qualify for the 1999 World Cup.
The Catalan Dragons rugby league team - based in Perpignan - play in the English Super League and have hosted a game in Barcelona, which also used to boast an American football team in NFL Europe.
