Sheffield teenager Katie Summerhayes bounced back from a career-threatening injury to claim a silver medal at the Slopestyle World Cup in Silvaplana, Switzerland.
The 17-year-old grabbed her first career podium finish yesterday in her first competition back after snapping her anterior cruciate ligament last year which required reconstructive surgery.
Summerhayes said: “To finish second in my first event back is just amazing. I was just aiming for the top five but it is great to get on the podium so soon after my injury.”
Slopestyle – which has both ski and snowboard disciplines and takes the form of a judged run down a steep course strewn with obstacles – will make its debut at the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, British skier Chemmy Alcott has pulled out of the World Championships after injuring herself in training. The 30-year-old had a high-speed crash in Schladming, Austria, causing “excessive stress” in the plated fracture of the leg she broke two years ago.
