Triples championship hit by washout
BOWLS: Bowls Scotland had to abandon their Women’s Two Bowls Triples Championship midway through the semi-finals due to flooded greens at St Vincent in Glasgow yesterday and have rescheduled the final stages for Bonnybridge on Sunday, 9 September.
Yesterday, Queen’s Park met Chirnside in the top half of the draw and Uphall Station clashed with Bellshill and Mossend in the other.
Queen’s Park’s Cathy Moore, Jan Woodley and Anne Dunwoodie set up their tilt at the title with wins over Whitburn, Abbeyview and Glaston, while Chirnside’s Helen Kenny, Kay Purves and Sheila Douglas had beaten Nairn, Clackmannan and the J G Fleming trio from Paisley.
Dianne Rarity, Sandra Steven and Kirsteen McLellan, from Uphall, ended the hopes of the host club St Vincent, added a straight sets win over Ladybank and then beat Pollokshaws to stay in contention, while Sandra McTavish, Jean Gillon and Fiona Kerr from Bellshill cruised home 17-1, 12-1 against Braid, then stayed in contention after tie-breaks against Forth & Wilsontown and then Aberchirder.
Meanwhile, 20 years to the day after losing out in the final of the Ayr Tournament at Northfield, Craigie’s Wilson Duffy suffered the same fate, this time dropping a treble on the 21st to lose 21-20 to Auchinleck’s Garry Johnston.
Hawick international Joyce Dickey beat Kincaidston bowler Sheila Cole 21-18.
