Shinty: Newtonmore stripped of Sutherland Cup
Newtonmore have had the Sutherland Cup taken from them for fielding an ineligible player in the semi-final and final of the competition.
The Eilan outfit’s second team lifted the trophy against rivals Kingussie 4-3 in front of 700 fans last month, with Calum Stewart scoring twice.
However, it transpired later that, due to genuine error, Newtonmore had fielded Stewart unaware he had played too many-first team games to be eligible.
Following a meeting of the Camanachd Association’s Behaviour In Sport Committee, and after legal advice being sought, the authorities have decided to disqualify the club. The final will now be replayed between Kingussie and Glenurquhart, who lost to Newtonmore in the semi-final.
Meanwhile, Oban Camanachd face Glenurquhart in the Artemis Macaulay Cup final today looking to prove that they are reformed following a few years of disciplinary problems.
“It disappointed me to see what was happening to Camanachd when I was on the outside,” said manager Gus Campbell, the last Oban player to hold aloft today’s trophy.
“But we’re working to turn it round.”
