Ice Hockey: Jarolin treble sees Caps win at 39th try

SLOVAKIAN forward Rene Jarolin claimed a hat-trick as Edinburgh Capitals ended their winless run at the 39th attempt last night with arch ice hockey rivals Fife Flyers on the receiving end.

Home fans had not celebrated a win at Murrayfield since December 11 last year when Capitals beat Nottingham Panthers 5-4 in the Elite League.

The humbling 8-3 defeat is a massive jolt for Fife who were outshot 53-17. The Fifers came to Murrayfield full of optimism looking for a Challenge Cup double after a recent comeback 3-2 victory at Kirkcaldy.

Tomas Valecko claimed a double with Marcis Zembergs, skipper Jan Safar and Bari McKenzie joining in. Matt Siddall netted twice for Fife with Mike Hamilton claiming the other. Capitals’ other weekend game saw them lose 7-3 at Nottingham in the Elite League, Martin Petrina, Peter Holecko and Richard Hartmann scoring.
