Hockey: Grange eye bragging rights over city rivals Inverleith

GRANGE are bidding to put the skids under Inverleith on the eve of their city hockey rivals’ European debut.

Coach David Knipe is eyeing a shock result in tomorrow’s “knockout” indoor event at Perth. And his hopes are increased as Inverleith will be without Scotland goalkeeper Allan Dick.

Fife-born Dick will instead be playing for his English club outdoors as Inverleith make their final preparations for the EuroHockey Indoor Club Trophy at Napier University next weekend when they compete against teams from seven other nations.

Grange finished third in the eight-strong Division One league collecting 24 points from 14 games and were beaten 4-3 by Inverleith last Saturday.

Inverleith finished runners-up on goal difference to Dundee-based Grove Menzieshill in this season’s domestic league, as they both finished on 39 points after 14 games.

Grove play their city rivals Wanderers in the semi-finals tomorrow. Wanderers finished fourth with 16 points from 14 games and will look to add this title to the league championship which they have won seven times in the last eight seasons.

Grove, who won women’s Division One, play CALA Edinburgh, who were fourth, in one semi-final of the women’s event while second-placed Dundee Wanderers clash with Western who were third.

Tomorrow’s event will also include an under-18 exhibition match between Inverleith under-18 girls and a Scottish girls U18 select. Entry is free.

Schedule: 10.00 – Grove Menzieshill v VWS Dundee Wanderers (men’s semi-final); 10.55 – Inverleith v Grange (men’s semi-final); 11.50 – Grove Menzieshill v CALA Edinburgh (women’s semi-final); 12.45 – VWS Dundee Wanderers v Milne Craig Western (women’s semi-final); 13.40 – Inverleith Girls U18 (under- 18 Indoor Scottish Cup winners) v Scottish Girls U18 Select (U18 girl’s exhibition match); 14.45 – men’s final; 15.40 – Women’s Final
