Free-scoring Inverleith keep their title bid alive
THANKS to an avalanche of goals, Inverleith made up some valuable ground on rivals Grove Menzieshill in the two-horse race for the Subway indoor national league title.
With three crushing victories over Glynhill Kelburne (13-1), VWS Dundee Wanderers (10-1) and Greaves Clydesdale (16-1), the Edinburgh side are within three points of the Taysiders, and now boast a superior goal difference. The two sides meet next weekend, but only a win will give Inverleith any chance of retaining the crown they won for the first time last season.
The victory over Kelburne saw Graham Moodie score four goals, while Stephen Dick weighed in with a hat-trick. In their second game two goals by Dick and another from Derek Salmond gave the Edinburgh side a three-goal lead against VWS Dundee Wanderers at the interval. In the second half Salmond scored another three, Dick got his hat-trick, John Harris found the net twice and Moodie finished off the scoring.
Clydesdale were next to be crushed by the Inverleith goal machine. Salmond and Dick were again on target with five goals each, Moodie scored four and the rest of the 16 came from Andrew Malcolm and Harris.
Menzieshill were no slouches in the art of goal scoring either. Against bottom side CALA Edinburgh they also racked up a 16-1 victory. There were four goals each for Ross McPherson and Josh Cairns and a hat-trick for Michael Ross, while Gavin Tomlinson, Chris Wilson and Gavin Byers combined to complete the scoring. This was followed by the 7-0 mauling of Western Wildcats, a result that was never really in doubt when the Taysiders were four up at the interval through Byers (2), Wilson and Cairns from a penalty corner. Menzieshill added three more in the second half, Gavin Tomlinson from a set piece followed by a closing couple from Ross.
Fraser Sands was the toast of Grange as they consolidated third spot. Sands scored four in the 5-3 defeat of Wanderers and a further five in a thrilling 8-8 draw with Kelburne.
CALA Edinburgh made an immediate return to the second division after further reversals at the hands of Menziehill, Clydesdale and Wanderers.
The fate of the women’s indoor crown will now be an all-Tayside affair after Grove Menzieshill defeated Milne Craig Western 2-0 in the game of the day yesterday. Both goals were carbon copy penalty corner strikes from Ali Bell in the first half.
Western put the Dundonians under pressure towards the end of the contest, but goalkeeper Nikki Cochrane proved equal to the task.
