Smith and Fleming take Scottish Junior titles
CURLING: Kyle Smith and his Perth team of Kerr Drummond, Kyle Waddell and third player Thomas Muirhead, beat Stranraer’s Jay McWilliam in yesterday’s final to take gold and the national title in the Scottish Junior Curling Championships at Curl Aberdeen.
Smith’s 7-2 victory was set up with a single steal in the fourth end for a 2-0 lead, and twos in each of the eighth and ninth ends put the result beyond doubt.
In the women’s event, Lockerbie’s Hannah Fleming led her team of Abi Brown, Alice Spence and third player Lauren Gray to a convincing 9-2 win over Lanarkshire’s Hazel Smith to claim the title.
The tipping point in this game came during the fourth end when Fleming scored four for a 6-1 lead, and eventually Smith conceded after just eight ends.
Fleming and Smith now lead their teams into action as Scotland’s representatives at the World Junior Curling Championships in Sweden at the start of March.
