Bowls: Porty ladies clean up in home derby

The ladies of Portobello indoor bowls club launched their campaign in Division 1C of the national league system with a resounding 106-66 home victory over Edinburgh rivals Bainfield.

There were victories on the rinks skipped by Isabel Anderson, Rita Reid and Barbara Kay, with a peel for Catherine Jones.

It looked likely to be a clean-sweep for Portobello at one stage until a 13-0 fightback over the last five ends saw Marion of Dickson of Bainfield salvage a 22-22 share with Jones.

Portobello made a strong start to dominate the first seven-end phase 41-14 and win the second and third 33-28 and 32-24.

Anderson had the major influence on the match as she skipped Izzie Dixon, Zandra Kinnear and May Brownlee to a spectacular 34-10 victory over Karen Tumblety, Heather Stoddart, Theresa Blair and Anna Anderson.

A blitz start of 5, 1, 6, 3, 1, 3 to lead 19-0 after six ends was inspirational to the team effort across the carpet and a further highlight was celebrated when carding a mighty 5 at the 11th end to stand 28-3 up.

Reid and her rink of Alison McDougall, Elizabeth Parkinowski and Margaret Keenan found it tougher going against Susan Brown, Sheila Grigor, Isa Brown and Anne Watson as they trailed the visitors 14-12 after 14 ends.

But the home rink changed the picture with a power-packed finish of 1, 2, 4, (1), 1, 4 (1) finish to score a 24-16 victory.

Kay made her first impression with a run of 1, 5, 2, 1, 1, 1, to cross 11-5 then skipped Jackie McFarlane, Nan Lake and Cathy Ward to a battling 26-18 win over Aimee Robertson, Ann Matthew, Susan Allan and Kathryn O’Donnell.

Jones skipped Catherine McLeod, Helen Gray and Nicola Barclay into a 22-9 lead but conceded 2, 2, 4, 2, 3 to Eleanor Campbell, Dorothy Barclay, Hazel Crombie and Dickson on the run in.

East Lothian will be strong rivals to Portobello and the Garden County ladies won 100-65 over Tweedbank at the Meadowmill stadium.

The rinks skipped by Emma Brown, Rose McAinsh and Janet Fairnie produced polished performances to win while the only setback saw Yvonne Veitch lose by 2.

West Lothian suffered a 94-74 away defeat from Headwell in Division 1B.
