Bowls: Logan’s run continues as West Lothian win again

West Lothian IBC pulled off a great result in their bid to retain the indoor bowls Premier League title by scoring an encouraging away victory over Midlothian at the weekend, defeating the 2010-11 champions 77-66 at Dalkeith.

Midlothian were without internationalists Graeme Archer and Calum Crawford plus stalwart Lindsay Plenderleith, making them vulnerable to a West Lothian team fired up by their opening win over East Lothian. Wins for the rinks skipped by Calum Logan, Neil Speirs and Mark Allison carried the day for the visitors whose only setback came with the defeat of team captain Thomas Mann.

The visitors stormed into a 33-17 lead then were challenged by the threatening loss of the second, 33-22, before winning the third 22-14.

Logan skipped Dougie Mitchell, Blair Mackie and George Sneddon to a 22-14 win over Midlothian icon David Peacock having added 2, 2, 2, to lead 14-8 then enjoying a purple patch spell from 14-11 to 21-11 with counts of 2, 2, 1, 1, 1.

Speirs was a sharp blade in his opening assault on Ronnie Duncan and shredded his fellow cap by skipping Bryan Cooper, James Greenock and Des Hagart into an 11-2 lead after seven ends then traded on that lead to win 19-12.

Allison fought hard to gain an edge from 8-8 to 14-9 then battled on well to skip Paul Lynas, Raymond Logan and Jamie Gracie to a 16-12 win over Midlothian team captain Billy Peacock.

Mann and his rink of Cameron Greer, Ian Drysdale and David Wilson had their hands full against fellow cap Colin Walker so having trailed 7-0, 14-8, and 24-13 did well to contain the extent of their final defeat to 28-20.

Meanwhile, East Lothian bounced back from their earlier defeat to score a 77-66 victory over Coatbridge at the
Meadowmill stadium.
