Bowls: Gourlay ends Marshall run

just 24 hours after winning a record 19th world bowls title, Tranent’s Alex Marshall saw his hopes of a record-extending sixth indoor singles crown ended by fellow Scot David Gourlay.

Playing for a place in the quarter-finals, Gourlay won 9-4 with one end to play in the first set, then 12-1, with three ends remaining, in the second.

Marshall, who won the pairs title with Paul Foster at the Potters Leisure Resort in Norfolk on Monday, admitted: “David totally out-bowled me. Some days results go for you and some days they don’t.”

Foster, meanwhile, teamed up with Laura Thomas, from Wales, to claim the world matchplay mixed pairs crown, beating Arbroath’s Darren Burnett and Karen Murphy, from Sydney, 12-5, 10-6.
