Six qualify for Hope Trust Trophy final

BASKETBALL: After a full day of action at Meadowbank, six Edinburgh primary schools – Bruntsfield, Duddingston, James Gillespie’s, St Peter’s, Victoria and Flora Stevenson – have qualified for next month’s final of the Hope Trust Trophy.

It is the second year of the tournament – Lorne Primary School won the inaugural title and they were among the 18 schools that took part this year but failed to make it through to the final back at Meadowbank on 12 March.

Lorcan McDermott (St Peter’s) was one of the stand-out players. He plays for Boroughmuir Blaze in the Regional Development League.

Other stars were Freya Calder (Duddingston), Victor Vunga (Flora Stevenson) and Anna Duncan (Brunstfield).

The tournament is part of basketball’s development pathway and the hope is that the youngsters will continue to compete in the sport when they progress to secondary school in the autumn. More than 200 pupils compete monthly in the sport’s Cluster Challenges.
