Basketball: Glasgow pull off a Giant-killing act

Glasgow Rocks edged out Manchester Giants 88-85 last night to book a showdown with Sheffield in the quarter-finals of the BBL Cup.

But Sterling Davis’s men had to battle from 11 down in the third quarter, pulling off a late decisive run to pick up with their first win at the Emirates Arena.

A 17-2 run pushed the Giants 40-33 clear at half-time with out-of-sorts Glasgow struggling to keep up. But Rocks captain EJ Harrison, who had a game-high 27 points, hauled his side ahead with two minutes left.

Then the great escape was completed when David Aliu’s last-second effort to force overtime hit the rim.

“We’re still struggling, and we’re up and down, but that’s because we’re still a work in progress,” said Glasgow forward Kieron Achara, who had 18 points and nine rebounds.

“But it’s good that we’ve now got a win in our new building. That will settle us down.”

Aliu led Manchester’s scoring with 20 points.
