Northern set up Moray tie
EDINBURGH NORTHERN put in a good second-half performance to see off a stuffy Royal Dick Vet College side at Peffermill and progress to the next round of the Scottish Hydro Regional Bowl, writes GARY HEATLY.
In the preliminary round tie of the new competition, the student side from East Two were a match for their opponents from East One early on with the scores being tied at 12-12 at the break.
Wingers Doug Younger and Luke Lewis had grabbed Northern's first-half tries in the mud and, after the break, the visitors upped it a gear to win 26-12. The second-half tries came from centre Ben Guerin and stand-off Alex Laird.
Northern now progress to a first-round tie with Moray House on Saturday, 28 November.
Also in the preliminary round at the weekend, Portobello beat Leith 57-14 at Academy Park while Queensferry and Napier University withdrew from their away ties at Hawick Harlequins and Earlston respectively.
On league duty at the weekend, Edinburgh University defeated Annan 29-6 to record their fourth win of the National One season. Linlithgow lost 25-3 at home to Whitecraigs, while RHC Cougars squeezed out East Kilbride 6-5 and Murrayfield Wanderers lost 36-26 at home to Ellon.
Lasswade beat promotion rivals Glasgow Accies 19-0 at Hawthornden in National Two, but in National Three Ross High and Trinity Accies both lost on the road. The Tranent men went down 36-19 at Marr with Trinity losing 20-3 at Aberdeenshire.
