North Berwick tournament hits landmark
PROVING that sevens rugby is not confined to the 16 Borders teams will help North Berwick toast their 50th anniversary tournament at Recreation Park this afternoon.
The club itself was only founded in 1952, but the sevens tournament has survived increasing congestion challenges in the season to remain a vibrant success for the club.
The 2009 event, sponsored by Forth Group and House Call, kicks off at 1pm with holders Haddington facing Watsonians and a Forth Resource Management side taking on Ross High with the winners taking home the Stewart Cup.
With the growing success of their youth section, North Berwick are also launching an under-18 ten-a-side tournament this year which features six teams from across Edinburgh and East Lothian competing for the House Call Cup.
North Berwick 50th Sevens (first ties 1pm): Haddington v Watsonians, Forth Resource Management v Ross High; Musselburgh v Penicuik, Gala YM v Edinburgh Accies, North Berwick v Forrester, Dalkeith v Hawick Harlequins, North Berwick Exiles v Preston Lodge, North Berwick 2nd VII v Standard Life.
North Berwick U18s Tens (first ties 1pm): BATS v North Berwick, Lasswade v Boroughmuir, BATS v Murrayfield Wanderers, Lasswade v Dunbar, North Berwick v Murrayfield Wanderers, Boroughmuir v Dunbar.
