Murdoch in ideal warm-up for European defence
CURLING: Lockerbie's David Murdoch, Scottish, European and world champion, gave himself the ideal final preparation for the defence of his European title yesterday with a 7-6 win over Perth's Peter Loudon in the Edinburgh International Curling Championships final at Murrayfield.
This year's European Championship is being hosted in Aberdeen, and Murdoch starts his campaign there on Saturday morning.
Unusually, particularly as teams from 11 different nations were in the line-up this year, all four semi-finalist teams were led by Scottish skips, all unbeaten until they reached the semi-finals.
Murdoch and his team of Euan Byers, Pete Smith – apparently fully restored after a serious back injury – and Ewan MacDonald beat Aberdeen's Tom Brewster by 4-3 in his semi-final, while Loudon beat his fellow-Perth skip Warwick Smith by 5-4 in his semi-final.
