Mowbray voices his interest in Korean Ki
CELTIC manager Tony Mowbray has confirmed his club's interest in South Korean midfielder Ki Sung-yong, but insists he is viewed purely as a long-term prospect.
The highly rated 20-year-old FC Seoul player, who has also been linked with Porto, Hamburg and PSV Eindhoven, has been formally approached by Celtic.
Mowbray, who signed South Korean international Kim Do-heon when he was manager of West Bromwich Albion, said: "I'd like to play it down a little bit. I have seen the boy and he's very, very young.
"I don't see him making a big impact on the team right now. If he does come, then I'd suggest it's something for the future.
"He's a young player with potential. Every player we sign is a big signing, but this kid has potential."
The player's agent, Lee Yeung Joong, expressed doubt over whether a move would go through during the current transfer window.
"Celtic have offered Ki a contract," said Joong, "but the problem lies with his current club because they are very negative about selling him.
"Ki is a very good player but FC Seoul do not want to let him go. He certainly has a lot of potential and there is no doubt he has a very good future in the game.
"In my opinion, a transfer before the August deadline will be very difficult to achieve. It is unlikely. I think a transfer in January would be a far more agreeable prospect to this club."
