Motocross: Ben Thomson looks to stay out in front

TEENAGE Scottish rider Ben Thomson will this weekend bid to stay ahead of the field in the GBXC Championship at Tyn Twll in Oswestry.

Thomson, from Hume near Kelso, just turned 15 last month but has taken the British Championship by storm in his first full year on a 125cc bike. He competes in the 13-16 years class and although he has not won any of the three rounds to date he has been the most consistent rider and so tops the British table by two points from highly-rated Birmingham talent Jack Edmondson. The 27-strong championship field – Thomson is the sole Scot – start with the one-lap sprints this morning and then the full two-hour race tomorrow. Thomson said: “The season has gone really well. Even though I haven’t won any races yet I’ve been consistent and it feels amazing to be at the top of the championship.”
