McNish victory stretches lead in Le Mans series

DUMFRIES' Allan McNish extended his lead in the American Le Mans Series to 39 points after he sealed victory in the latest round in Portland. But the 36-year-old from Dumfries was made to work hard after he took over from Italian Dindo Capello in fifth place.

"Dindo was forced to fight the car during his stint after he was almost spun at the first corner of the opening lap," Audi R10 TDI driver McNish said yesterday. "The impact caused a lot of imbalance in the car and it was tough for him. The problems were corrected when he came in for the driver change and we put new tyres on the car. After that, the car ran like a dream."

Within five minutes of rejoining in fifth place, McNish had fought his way through to lead his Audi sister car of Frank Biela and Emanuele Pirro who held on to finish second. England's Guy Smith and Chris Dyson finished third in the lead Lola.
