An emotional Craig Cook today said it was “the proudest day” of his life on hearing the news that he has been picked for Team GB’s World Cup speedway squad to face Denmark, Sweden and USA at King’s Lynn on Monday, July 15.
The Edinburgh Monarchs No. 1, who is the top rider in the Premier League this season, feels he has been justifiably rewarded for the sheer volume of hard work he is putting in to his sport at the moment.
He told the Evening News: “The news didn’t sink in for about five minutes because I was so emotional. I’m so happy and I have been working so hard, and it’s all been about working towards this moment.”
Team GB boss Neil Middleditch has been watching Cook in action recently and the rider added: “This is recognition for the way I have been riding for Edinburgh and Belle Vue Aces, Neil obviously thinks I have been doing something right and has been impressed with the form I have been showing this year.
“I just need to keep this going and keep on working.”
The King’s Lynn meeting is a huge stage for Cook and the ideal shop window for him to put down a marker on the international stage. “I’m not going to be overawed by the occasion,” he said. “I have just got to go out and do it. I’m looking forward to riding with my team-mates (Tai Woffinden, Eddie Kennett and Chris Harris) I know them pretty well and get along with all three.
“I think we have got a great chance of winning the World Cup and I will be giving it 110 per cent. To ride for your country, it doesn’t get better than that, and it all comes down to dedication. You don’t get anything by sitting on your backside, you have to grab any opportunities with both hands.”
Middleditch commented: “Congratulations to Craig and I’m delighted for the lad.”
