Morton 1-1 St Mirren: Buddies spot on in cup triumph
Morton 1 Russell 23 St Mirren 1 McAusland 25 St Mirren win 5-4 on penalties
ST MIRREN claimed their 50th Renfrewshire Cup triumph with a penalty shoot-out win over Morton.
With the early urgency coming from the home side it wasn't the biggest surprise when they deservedly made the breakthrough. The visiting defence was all too easily cut to ribbons as summer signing Jon Newby silver-served Iain Russell for a tap-in. Stung into action, the SPL team wasted less than two minutes in restoring level pegging. Andy Dorman's corner was met perfectly by Mark McAusland, who despite being bandaged and bloodied from an earlier head wound guided his header beyond Colin Stewart.
With honours even at the end of 90 minutes extra time was bypassed in favour of a penalties. With one miss apiece Garry Brady calmly slotted the first sudden-death kick, allowing Saints goalkeeper Mark Howard to be the hero by blocking Peter Weatherson's penalty.
