JACK MURRAY bounced back from defeat on the football pitch to prove a champion in the boxing ring – all in the same day!

Jack, 12, had no time to feel down after he and his Hibs youth team-mates were thrashed 6-0 by Celtic on Saturday morning for, just four hours later, he donned the ring vest colours of Tranent-based Bronx boxing club at the Ravenscraig Centre in Motherwell. After his frantic rush along the M8, light-flyweight Murray – son of former Hearts and current Raith Rovers star Grant Murray – grabbed Scottish schoolboy title glory by outscoring clubmate Ross Punton by 8-3 points in their 44kg final.

Bronx coach Alex Brown explained: “On Saturday morning at nine, I had to take Jack to the championship weigh-ins in Motherwell then whip him back along the M8 to the East Mains training ground to get changed for Hibs’ game against Celtic, where he played right back. Then I had to get him back to his dressing-room in Ravenscraig in time for the final.

“I wondered how Jack would react after such a gruelling schedule but he answered my concerns in no uncertain fashion by boxing brightly against Ross Punton, an opponent who didn’t disgrace himself by any means.”
