Edinburgh’s Martin Campbell got a first-class honours degree in maths and management from Loughborough Univerity last year – now his focus is on excelling at badminton.
Yesterday, the 22-year-old was at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow to help celebrate the announcement that the Scottish Open has been granted Grand Prix Status by the Badminton World Federation.
Tomorrow, he flies out with the Scottish team for the Sudirman Cup – the World Mixed Team Championships.
The 2013 Scottish Open will become the circuit’s newest Grand Prix tournament, backed by the City of Glasgow and boasting a £750,000 package, at the Emirates Arena from November 20-24.
“The Scottish Open has always been one of the best tournaments on the circuit and the upgrade is well deserved,” said doubles expert Campbell.
“It moved to Emirates Arena last November and it was great. I decided to concentrate on badminton for the next couple of seasons at least. I am doing a computing course through the Open University. It is a good escape from training, but I am really looking forward to the Commonwealth Games and everything that goes with it.”
