Leith’s Patrick Dawson lost to Russian Musa Mogushkov in the first round of the Under-73kg event at the European Judo Championships in Budapest.

Mogushkov reached the second round of the Under-66kg event at London 2012. Dawson had gone into the championships with high hopes having beaten Olympic champion Mansur Isaev, also from Russia, in South America last month

And Edinburgh’s Sally Conway saw her medal hopes dashed after losing her opening bout yesterday.

The 70kg player, who will have her sights set on next year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, won a Grand Prix event in Turkey last month and had high hopes of matching Ashley McKenzie’s 60kg bronze from Thursday, but Conway’s Pool B campaign was soon over following a first-round bye.

In round two she faced Slovenia’s Anka Pogacnik who landed a Yuko in the opening seconds. Conway tried to respond but failed to register a score as she slumped out of the competition.

There were also early exits for Megan Fletcher after making it into the second round, while at under-73kg, Patrick Dawson and Jan Gosiewski both failed to make an impact on the tournament as did Tom Davis in his weight category.

Ex-Marine Chris Sherrington was due to compete today in the over-100kg heavyweight category as does Natalie Powell of Wales at -78kg and Ben Fletcher at -100kg.
