EDINBURGH City Lacrosse Club underlined their supremacy in the Scottish National League by securing their third consecutive league championship title.
The Broughton High School-based outfit have benefited from a strong continuity within the ranks over the past few years, coupled with the emergence of some youthful faces to the squad who have also delivered on the field, as Canadian defender Scott Swan explained: “We’ve had a pretty good core of guys over the last few seasons within the team and that has certainly helped. It’s about keeping that level of intensity up and that is something we have managed to achieve.
“We had one guy last year Ed Fennel, who’s only 16, and was training with us but wasn’t old enough to play. He’s played this year though and also scored his first goal and has been selected for the Scottish team for the British Nationals as well. We have ten guys who are involved in the Scotland squad for the British Nationals so we’ve kept training for a couple of weeks to keep their fitness up ahead of that.”
One setback from this season’s success has been the club’s decision to decline an invitation to compete in the European Club Championships in the Belgian city of Ghent in September with the funding for such a trip is simply prohibitive.
Swan said: “We’re not going to be able to go because of the costs. We’ve actually qualified for the last three seasons but we’ve just not been able to go. It’s frustrating because these are the best club teams in Europe and we’re not getting the chance to play against them. You only get better as a player yourself when playing against better opponents where you learn new things, but hopefully we’ll get that opportunity at some point in the future.
“The sport itself is growing and there are now eight teams in our league. It all boils down to money but we did really well this year by getting a sponsor. We’re always looking for sponsors though because we pay for everything on our own.”
Edinburgh City Lacrosse Club welcomes any interested parties in providing sponsorship for next season. If interested, please email this address: email@example.com or visit the club website at www.edinburghlacrosse.co.uk .
