Montgomery uses local knowledge to his advantage

LOTHIANS golfer Jacky Montgomery and Burntisland partner Paul Wytrazek formed part of a three-way tie at the top in the first PGA Winter Series event at Dunbar.

Montgomery, the host club's professional, and Wytrazek posted a four-under 67 in the fourball contest and shared the honours with Craig Matheson and Lee Mackie, and Colin Campbell and Colin Sinclair. Merchants of Edinburgh's Neil Colquhoun and his partner, Kenny Campbell, hit a 68 while Lothians duo Paul Wardell and Fraser Mann had a 69.

The next event of the new series, designed to keep Scotland's club professionals in competitive action over the winter, will be held at Dundonald in mid-December.

&#149 SCOTLAND'S Tartan Tour pros share second place after the opening round of the European PGA Team championship at the Roda club in Murcia, Spain.

The Scots, winners of the title in 2006, posted a level-par 144 in windy conditions to finish four shots behind early leaders Ireland.

Robert Arnott of Bishopbriggs led the way with a two-under 70 while Colville Park's Sam Cairns added a 74. Uphall's former Scottish PGA champion Gordon Law had a non-counting 75.

England finished alongside the Scots on 144 while Wales completed the home nation dominance on day one by coming in fourth on 145. Austria, the defending champions, are 12 shots off the pace after a 152.
