Montgomerie withdraws from US Open qualifier

COLIN Montgomerie is among a number of late withdrawals from today's 36-hole US Open qualifier at Walton Heath. The Ryder Cup captain was due to tee off at 8.20am, but pulled out after a closing 76 in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The qualifier has 11 spots available for next month's tournament at Bethpage Black. Montgomerie's World Cup-winning partner Marc Warren withdrew as well after also scoring 76 and Anthony Wall, joint sixth in the Tour's flagship event, will no longer compete.

Montgomerie has not had a top 10 since he was runner-up in the French Open last June. He was seventh with a round to go in last week's Irish Open and crashed to an 80, while his round at Wentworth dropped him from 10th to 35th.

Still in the field are former Ryder Cup players David Howell, Niclas Fasth, Thomas Levet and Paul McGinley. Montgomerie has only missed the US Open once, in 2004.
