Michie on the mark as Montrose go through
NEWLY signed Montrose striker Scott Michie came back last night to haunt his previous club Peterhead.
Michie joined Montrose last week in a 10,000 move from the Second Division club and led the way in his new side's 2-0 win to send Peterhead out of the Challenge cup.
The two sides had met a week ago in the CIS League Cup but Peterhead manager Iain Stewart had held up the transfer move of Michie so that he could not play against them as they went on to an extra-time win.
But the move went through last Thursday and Michie revelled against his former teammates so that his new club earned their place in today's second-round draw and ensured there would be no defeat this time around.
With the sides level after a goal-less first half, Montrose struck in a three minute spell with first Greg Henslee breaking the deadlock in 53 minutes and then Michie adding the second.
Gretna are in cup-chasing mood after the disappointment of their European venture a week ago and they made certain there would be no slip ups in a convincing 3-0 win at Airdrie United.
Kenny Deuchar did his best to ease any nerves they may have had when he knocked in a 12th minute opener and although manager Sandy Stewart's side fought back they were caught out in a five-minute second half spell.
First Steve Tosh made it two in 71 minutes and then Deuchar emphasised his scoring danger when he added a third.
Two goal Craig Gunn sealed Ross County's 3-0 win at East Fife to make certain that there would be no repeat of the previous evening's giant killing in the competition.
After Andy Dowie had given County the lead midway through the first half, Gunn struck twice in a two-minute second-half spell to wrap up the scoring with goals in the 70th and 72nd minutes.
Elgin at last found the form which had deserted them in the opening games as they clinched a second round place with a 2-0 win over Third Division promotion favourites Stenhousemuir.
And it was Martin Charlesworth who did the damage as he drove in a 79th minute opener and then made certain with a last-minute second to complete the scoring.
