McEwan makes surprise appearance to cheer on comeback boxer Dredge
FORMER Scottish middleweight champion Craig McEwan took time out from sparring with Joe Calzaghe opponent Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas to make a surprise appearance at his father Rab's annual club spring boxing show at the Greenway centre in Wester Hailes yesterday.
McEwan hoped to inspire his brother-in-law, Clovenstone light-welterweight Alistair Dredge, to beat Gilmerton's Sean Eng but Eng unanimously outpointed Dredge, who was having his first bout in five years.
In another absorbing contest, Eng saw his brother Scott outscore Forthside's Lewis Gray at lightweight.
Clovenstone featherweight, Gordon Izzat, won his top-of-the-bill scrap with Sparta's Eastern champion, Davie Cowan on points.
Sparta boxers had rather a lean time with novice lightweight champion, Brian Lacey, losing out on points to Cloventone's Lee Redpath.
However, there was some joy for Sparta when featherweight Tony James derailed the ring comeback of Clovenstone veteran, Danny Forrest, just two hours after undergoing an arduous international coaching session with Scottish National Senior coach Kevin Smith at the Gilmerton club gym.
Meanwhile, a fit and bronzed McEwan said: "I was pleased to see that the standard among our younger boxers is still so high.
"I fly back to Vegas in ten days to get ready for my eight-rounder on May 3 on the same bill as my promoter, Oscar De La Hoya."
