Lothians trio storm into Porty finals

THREE eastern youth boxers battled their way to the brink of British title glory – and a possible Commonwealth youth games place in Poona, India, in October – by winning their way to tonight's finals at Portobello Town Hall.

Gilmerton flyweight Josh Taylor survived a rocky first round against Ashley Williams to subject the Welsh boxer to some furious jabs and hooks so impressively winning by 12-7.

Taylor now clashes in tonight's 51kgs 1991 class final with English counterpuncher, James Dickens.

But the eastern boxer with the toughest task on his hands was Leith Victoria light-welterweight, Sandy Forsyth – thanks to the chronic serial fouling of his Welsh opponent Dougie Price.

By the third round, the referee had already warned Price for a whole catalogue of rules infractions. By the fourth and final round, the referee lost patience with the Welshman and imposed two back-to-back public warnings for illegal holding and wrestling.

Incredibly, judges only saw Leith Vics ace Forsyth – who now faces England's Joe Hughes in the final – a single-point winner by 11-10.

In the 1991 class light-welterweight semi-final, Fauldhouse light-welterweight Robbie McKie beat England's Jack Kerr by 13-9 to book a final place against Welsh stylist Dale Evans.
