Local heroes: Martin on a roll in effort to catch Croall
Capital cyclist Dave Martin will resume his efforts to cut the deficit on leader Bruce Croall in the DHL Meadowbank Track League tonight, buoyed by a podium finish in Saturday's Scottish scratch championship.
The Bicycleworks rider had his bid for glory at the Caird Park track in Dundee thwarted by Evan Oliphant (Endura RT), who had competed in a stage race in the Czech Republic followed by a criterium in Lancashire before making the trip north.
Oliphant dominated the race to take his title tally to three for the season - he has already won the road race and ten-mile time trial gold medals - when he came home ahead of his fellow Scotland internationalist Davie Lines (Endura/Pedal Power Development Team), with Martin securing the bronze medal.
Now, with eight weeks of the league season left, Martin must make inroads into Croall's substantial lead if he is to prevent the City of Edinburgh man landing a sixth successive title.
Meanwhile, Alison Chisholm (Edinburgh RC) emulated Martin's effort in the women's scratch race at Dundee, taking third spot behind Gemma Neil (Sandy Wallace Cycles) and Anna Harris (Angus Bike Chain).
