Late McLeod strike takes Spartans into next round
SPARTANS progressed to the quarter-finals of the SFA South Region Challenge Cup with a 2-1 win against Capital rivals Edinburgh City thanks to a stoppage- time goal from striker Keith McLeod.
Jordan Caddow had given City an early lead, although McLeod equalised from the penalty spot, and extra time looked imminent until McLeod's late winner after a fumble by City's goalkeeper Duncan Monteith.
In the Central Taxis Premier Division there were goals galore at Yarrow Park as the home side, Selkirk, drew 5-5 with Borders rivals Coldstream. Selkirk were always ahead until the third minute of stoppage time when Dougie Brydon netted Coldstream's equaliser. The goal scorers for Selkirk were Chris Black, Lee Steven, Alan Jackson, Euan Pritchard and Jay Wilson while John Crawford (3) and Martin Mya also scored for Coldstream.
In the battle of the students, Heriot-Watt University beat Edinburgh University 2-0 with goals from Aaran James and Scott Sutherland.
In the First Division, Vale of Leithen moved within two points of leaders Stirling University and have a game in hand after they beat Ormiston 4-1. Aaran Somerville netted a hat-trick while Ousman Sonko also scored.
Gretna 2008 beat St Cuthbert Wanderers 3-0 with goals from Ian Cumersky and a Tony Nicholson double.
