Laing left frustrated after mistakes dog end of round
MUSSELBURGH'S Vikki Laing had a frustrating day as Ayrshire's Pamela Feggans and Curtis Cup player Krystle Caithness (St Regulus) coped well with the opening-round pressure at the Ladies' European Tour Final Qualifying School over La Manga's South course in Spain.
Laing, who finished in the top ten at last week's pre-qualifying at the same venue, was cruising along in sub-par figures until she dropped four shots in a row at the end for a three-over-par 76.
With the top 30 in the 95-strong field set to get full cards on Thursday, Laing, who has played in America since she turned professional five years ago, was lying in joint 42nd.
Feggans, 26, from Patna, who was a rookie on the US Futures Tour last year, had three birdies in a one-under-par 72 and was lying in joint seventh place and just three strokes behind the leader, South Korea's Jessica Ji.
Caithness, 19, with two birdies in the final six holes, was just a shot farther back on par 73 and it put the amateur in a tie for 14th place.
Archerfield's Lynn Kenny and last year's Curtis Cup team member Michele Thomson (Ellon McDonald's) were in a large group in joint 26th after hitting 75s.
Jenna Wilson, on 79, and Kylie Walker, with an 80, are two Scots with work to do over the next 54 holes.
Ji had a handful of birdies in her 69 and led by one from a group of four players that included Anna Highgate from Wales.
