Keothavong gives it her best shot

BRITISH No 1 Anne Keothavong bowed out of the US Open with her head held high after making Olympic champion Elena Dementieva work hard for her third-round victory in New York.

Keothavong, the world No 87 and playing her first US Open this week, become the first British woman to reach the third stage since Sara Gomer and Jo Durie in 1991.

Bidding to become the first to reach the fourth round since Durie, also in 1991, her surprise run in New York was halted by fifth seed Dementieva, who defeated the 24-year-old 6-3, 6-4.

Serbia's No 2 seed Jelena Jankovic beat China's Zheng Jie 7-5, 7-5, but third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia crashed out 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 to Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia after a plethora of unforced errors.
