Junior boxers fail to shine

LOCAL fighters didn't make their mark at the British Junior amateur boxing championships at Portobello Town Hall.

Craigmillar flyweight James Bruce's failure to throw more punches cost him victory against Wales' Ben Crocker, who outpointed him 4-3 in their semi-final.

And South Queensferry's lightweight Stuart Blackie's dream of becoming the newly-founded club's first-ever British junior champion was ended by England's George Crotty who commandingly defeated him 9-3.

Midlothian light-flyweight Dylan Moffat was also beaten – 8-3 by Londoner Alfie Price.

Moffat's Midlothian clubmate, light-welterweight Max Niven, was very unlucky to lose to Tom Price of Wales by a 5-4 computer countback after smart boxing has earned him a 2-2 draw.

Fauldhouse's 70kgs 1994 class contender Scott Forrest, battled his way to a 4-1 countback win over Welsh southpaw Koby Davies and will fight England's Steed Woodhall for the gold medal tonight. Fifer Mark Docherty who beat Welshman Cameron Halfpenny 2-0 is also going for gold.

Fife light-welterweight George Flanagan's fight ended in disgrace when he punched the referee on the shoulder after being disqualified for persistent holding and he now faces disciplinary action.
