Jones is on track for Glasgow 2014
SWIMMING: Emily Jones started swimming when a form from the Garioch Club was popped into her hand when she was a primary four pupil at Kellands School in Inverurie.
Now in her sixth year at Inverurie Academy and a highly successful junior international, she has recently made a switch in club in her bid to realise her dream of making the Scotland team for the 2014 Commonwealth games in Glasgow.
“I had lost a little of my spark at Garioch,” Emily explained. “And I felt that with 18 months to go before the Commonwealth Games trials then it was a good time to make the change.”
Now coached by Alison Low, she has already achieved the Games qualifying time for the 200m breaststroke and she is also a talented medley swimmer.
“By the time we get round to the Commonwealth Games I want to be making finals and aiming for medals,” she added.
“Already, I’m so looking forward to 2014. Glasgow is the first place that I competed in a 50m pool and I have always tended to do well there so it’s very exciting.”
With four Highers already in the bag, Emily has set her sights on studying maths or physics at university, hopefully at Edinburgh or Heriot-Watt.
Physical Education was one of her Standard Grade subjects and she is fortunate that her school has given her huge support in her swimming career.
“School has been fantastic,” she said. “Hannah Miley (the Commonwealth Games Champion) was also at Inverurie Academy so they had already been through the process with her and that that has definitely helped me.”
This season, Emily’s initial goal is to make the qualifying times for the 2013 World Championship trials.
