JOHN Sutton has been a spectator on big European nights often enough to know what they mean and the man who scored Motherwell's second in their 3-0 victory over Norwegian side Aalesunds last night to take his team into today's draw for the Europa League play-off round says he would love to emulate big brother Chris' feats by bettering one of the continent's great sides.
"I remember going to see him play in Europe for Norwich and for Celtic and when he was at Norwich I remember him going to Bayern Munich and knocking them out. It would be an aspiration to try to emulate that but I don't think anyone would be expecting that.
"They had Lothar Matthaeus playing for Bayern at that time and I remember Alan McInally predicting that Bayern were going to win by about ten and I don't think anyone could believe it when Jeremy Goss went and volleyed it in to give them a win."
But Motherwell manager Craig Brown says he would rather wait until the group stages to attempt a spot of giant-killing, joking that he was hoping to see his team paired with troubled club Real Mallorca. The Spanish side has been declared insolvent and Uefa have banned them from participating in this year's competition, meaning whoever draws them will be given a bye to the prestigious group stage.
"We are delighted that we might get a glamour tie but I think I want Real Mallorca! I'm joking a bit but there is an argument for wanting that because that would give us passage straight into the group stages and they are lucrative and they would bring big teams here. But there is also the argument for getting Juventus or Liverpool or a team like that."
