Officers have been investigating at the scene, with a section of the road cordoned off.

Anyone with information has been urged to contact police.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police in Edinburgh are investigating following a serious assault on a 53-year-old man.

“The incident happened around 7:10am at an address in the Canongate.

“The victim has been taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where he is in a serious condition. Inquiries are ongoing into this attack and anyone who can assist officers with their investigation is asked to contact police immediately.”
