Ice Hockey: League chief accuses Capitals of fielding player illegally

EDINBURGH Capitals are in a war of words over the status of Scots-born ice hockey forward Scott McKenzie.

The 23-year-old hitman is on loan from Tayside-based Dundee CCS Stars but Scottish Ice Hockey League (SIHL) chairman Jim Anderson claimed that the Dunfermline-born McKenzie has been playing illegally.

Doug Christiansen, Capitals' director of hockey, said: "Scott never signed a contract with Dundee.

"He is a Capitals player for the season."

The big American playcaller added: "The Elite League phoned on Wednesday and we have clarified the position.

"He has established himself in the team and the matter has been dealt with."

But Anderson said: "Scott McKenzie is a signed player for Dundee Stars.

"Capitals have not completed the loan forms."

Fife-based Anderson added: "I have contacted the Elite League to tell them that Scott is not a signed player for Edinburgh.

"He has been playing illegally since he joined them (Edinburgh].

"We have received the proper paper work from Dundee Stars but not from Edinburgh."

Meanwhile, Canadian defenceman Mike Benyon jetted home to Ottowa yesterday to sort out a family problem.

He will miss Capitals' home Elite League joust with Cardiff Devils on Sunday.
