The 19-year-old left-hander from Oban took to Twitter to express his frustration about things having turned sour for him on the other side of the Atlantic, writing: “Some people in this world are pathetic”.

A fall-out with the McNeese “Cowboys” head coach, Austin Burk, has resulted in MacIntyre, who was crowned Scottish champion at Muirfield in the summer, packing his bags just 18 months into the scholarship.

“I am done full stop over here,” he told The Scotsman.

“It’s been hard this semester and I’m leaving college to come home.”

MacIntyre fought back from four down at lunch in the 36-hole final to beat Daniel Young and become the first left-hander in living memory to win the SGU’s flagship event in East Lothian.

Soon after returning to the States, he won the Sam Hall Intercollegiate, the NCAA season opener, at Hattiesburg Country Club in Mississippi with rounds of 66, 68 and 65 for a 14-under-par total. Earlier in the year, the Glencruitten member capped a fine debut season in the US when he was named as the Freshman of the Year in the Southland Conference. His return has come too late for MacIntyre to be added to the Scottish squad heading out soon to the United Arab Emirates, but he will be in the group heading to South Africa early next year.
