Racing: Yarmouth stunned by 125-1 winner
Yarmouth’s EBF At The Races John Musker Fillies’ Stakes produced a 125-1 winner in Semayyel amid circumstances few would have forecast.
It is never a surprise for Clive Brittain to strike with an outsider, as it is a habit the 78-year-old has long enjoyed, but harder to predict was the demise of Sir Henry Cecil’s 4-6 favourite Timepiece in the Norfolk track’s feature race of the season. With last year’s Group 1 Falmouth Stakes to her name and a highly respectable finish behind the supreme Snow Fairy in France last month, this Listed event was expected to be well within Timepiece’s range but jockey Tom Queally went for an ambitious run up the far rail and found the door repeatedly shut in his face. Timepiece was eventually eased home 12th of the 13 starters.
Semayyel had taken a far safer position towards the middle of the track and quickened five lengths away from the furlong pole, providing the first part of a remarkable 4,283-1 double for her rider Freddie Tylicki.
Tylicki was the 2009 champion apprentice and his willingness to graft has seen him return to prominence, notably riding a 7,435-1 five-timer at Newcastle on Saturday. “I’m chuffed to bits that she has won such a big prize,” he said.
German-born Tylicki’s taste for a turn-up continued through 33-1 chance Emerald Wilderness in the Vauxhall Holiday Park Handicap. On a day for outsiders, 33-1 shot Faltering Fullback led a 1-2 for trainer Eric McNamara-trained in the Guinness Kerry National at Listowel. The County Limerick handler, who also saddled his dual winner Ponmeoath in the three-mile feature, sent out the runner-up Questions Answered for good measure.
Meanwhile, support refuses to abate for William Hill Ayr Gold Cup market leader Hawkeyethenoo, who is now 10-1 from 12-1 with the sponsors for Saturday’s Heritage Handicap, for which former Scotland manager Alex McLeish will make the draw at the course this morning. In addition, reigning champion Our Jonathan yesterday moved into second-favourite spot (12-1 from 16-1) in a bid to retain his crown, that would also provide owner Dr Marwan Koukash with a hat-trick in the big race.
William Hill spokeswoman Lucy Rhodes said: “No William Hill Ayr Gold Cup winner would be more popular than Hawkeyethenoo. He’s our worst result in the book at present and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him shorten further as the locals get stuck in on the big day.”
