Racing: Fanshawe’s devotion to High Jinx finally pays off

High Jinx showed he is a stayer on the upgrade by securing the spoils in Newmarket’s feature, the Fly London Southend To Dublin Levy Board Handicap. Trainer James Fanshawe has been patient with the four-year-old High Chapparal colt and was duly rewarded with a narrow triumph in the £50,000 contest over a mile and a half on the July course.

The 7-2 favourite’s success was part of a 611-1 treble on the day for Ryan Moore, who moved past the 50-winner mark for the season.

High Jinx’s stamina really came to the fore in the closing stages when he finally mastered Anatolian, ridden by Frankie Dettori. The victory margin was a neck and Fanshawe is now contemplating a shot at the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle on June 30.

He said: “He is in the Plate, but we will see. He has not had too much racing and you’ve got to be pretty streetwise for that race. I’m sure he will improve again for going a mile and six furlongs and he will definitely stay two miles. The race Ryan said for the long term is the Cesarewitch.

“He is a horse we’ve always liked and the important thing for him is that he likes a bit of cut in the ground.”

Moore’s first success was provided by Fast Or Free in the Fly London Southend To Ibiza Handicap. Trainer William Haggas’ charge won at Kempton over seven furlongs 12 days earlier and made no mistake in this mile contest off a mark of 80 on his handicap bow. The 7-1 chance scored by a length and a half from Takeitfromalady, with long-time leader Zakreet fading into third.

Haggas said: “He is learning. Ryan thought he might get a bit further but I think he looked fine at a mile.”

Moore’s excellent afternoon was made complete when trainer Richard Hannon’s second string Havana Gold sprang a 16-1 surprise in division two of the Fly London Southend to Belfast Maiden Stakes.

Pearl Acclaim, also trained by Hannon, was sent off the odds-on favourite but had no answer when his stablemate kicked on for a length-and-a-half win.

The first division of the maiden supplied a first Newmarket winner for Hugo Palmer courtesy of Tipping Over (9-1). Palmer is planning a step up in class for the Aussie Rules filly.
