Hockey: Kelburne are a bit tricky for Ricky

UNDER-SIEGE Waverley
Inveresk Trinity goalkeeper Ricky McIntyre turned to umpire Alex Fedenczuk towards the end of their Scottish Hockey Cup last-16 clash with Kelburne and asked: “How long to go?” The reply was “17 seconds” and McIntyre thought “Thank God.”

By that time, the 42-year-old – who hangs up his goalkeeping pads after 17 seasons in a few weeks time – had conceded his last goal in a 20-0 defeat to the reigning Scottish
champions and cup holders at the weekend.

McIntyre revealed: “My
previous worst was 14 goals.”

An under-strength Kelburne were 10-0 ahead at the break against the struggling Division Three outfit and didn’t let up.

Veteran goalkeeper McIntyre
admitted: “The speed and
intensity of their play was more than we could handle. They were 10-0 ahead at one stage and one of their guys ended with his face in the pitch
diving at the ball trying to score
another goal. That’s attitude.

“They came here wanting to play hockey and I’ve played against teams who were really arrogant. Kelburne were professional and got on with their job.

“They are the best team in Scotland and it showed.”

He added: “Did we learn anything? I suppose that we have to get basics right but that’s for the rest of the boys. I’m going to retire at the end of the season.”

Elsewhere, Grange moved into the quarter-final with a 6-4 victory at Clydesdale and Watsonians defeated Glasgow University 6-0.

Division Two side CALA
Edinburgh were thumped 11-0 at Aberdeen, but last year’s semi-finalists Inverleith won 15-0 at Division Three minnows Perthshire.
