Hirvonen boosts title chances

MIKKO Hirvonen made significant inroads into Sebastien Loeb's World Championship lead as he completed a comfortable victory in the Acropolis Rally.

The BP Ford team leader eased home 72 seconds clear of surprise second-placed finisher Sebastien Ogier, while Hirvonen's team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala was third.

The Citroen C4 of reigning champion Loeb failed to finish a race for the first time this season after the Frenchman suffered a massive shunt on Friday.

Loeb's lead in the standings has come under threat after finishing fourth in Italy last time out, with Hirvonen now only seven points behind.

"It really looked very difficult but it's turned out to be okay," said Hirvonen. "A perfect weekend for us, no mistakes and a really clever drive."
