Hannah Miley sets record but US in pole position
SWIMMING: HANNAH Miley recorded a new European 400m individual medley record in the British Gas Duel last night but the Scot could only look on as the United States underlined their dominance of world swimming.
Miley earned the E-Stars' first point with her time of 4:21.04 but Julia Smit set a new world mark of 4:21.04 ahead of Dagny Knutson as the US romped into a 22-1 lead.
Five world records and 11 victories from 14 events, though, is testament to the might of the US as they ended the first session in Manchester leading 89-33.
Despite the best efforts of Fran Halsall and Lizzie Simmonds, who claimed all Europe's three wins between them, this was never a competition. Instead, the US churned out win after win and the European select side face being on the wrong side of a record points loss, with the US's 112-point win over Australia in 2003 currently the widest margin.
